Gregor and the Squonk is a modern fairy-tale, a twisted, yet touching examination of how far people are willing to go for the sake of beauty.

Set in a Pennsylvania forest during the dead of winter, Gregor and the Squonk centers around Gregor Courtepy, a hunter deeply devoted to his vain wife, Margaret. After a countless number of plastic surgeries leaves her broken and self-loathing, Gregor enlists the help of their doctor to find a creature rumored to grant eternal beauty to whoever captures it. Absurd, fantastical, and often haunting, Gregor and the Squonk is the perfect fable for a society built on botox, rhinoplasty, and silicone.

What People Said...

   * A Metromix Theater Pick

Caffrey writes at least a tier above the usual fringe wash of pub-set angst-rant plays and superhero riffs; the unbridled screwball arguments he's written for the malcontent wife and the neurotic doctor are as funny and sophisticated as anything on Chicago boards at the moment... [T]his sprightly, spastic staging by new troupe Tympanic has eccentric comic performances delivered with confidence and nuance (wet-noodle Gerber is the standout as the can't-win physician); it's a promising outing for a company less than a year old.
Christopher Piatt - TimeOut Chicago

The show succeeds, in large part, because of the cast's consistently strong performances and Susan Myburgh's inventive direction. The (at times earsplitting) back-and-forth between doctor and patient shines during rare moments of tenderness.... [T]he performers invest Gregor's mission and the Squonk's misery with such crazy, insistent earnestness that you don't know whether to giggle or intervene.
Laura Kolb - Centerstage Chicago

Caffrey's script shows wit... and the cast demonstrates talent, intelligence, and commitment.
Tony Adler - Chicago Reader

[Megan Gotz' is] brilliantly emotionally invested while also being very playful and childlike. She brings the play to life on her entrance and makes you feel like you really are encountering a mythical creature. Her costuming and make-up are also another example of how very creative Tympanic can be.
Joe Janes - Bite and Smile

Everything... was above and beyond my expectations. Gregor and the Squonk is truly a gem among all the new works out in Chicago right now. If you're a lover of theatre or just a damn good story I highly, HIGHLY suggest you check out [Gregor and the Squonk].
